Modern Fare Eatery with Small Town Charm

Rarely, do we have rainy days in Austin, TX but as fate would have it, my daughter and I got to spend a rainy afternoon on the porch of Sweet Lemon Kitchen. My four year old daughter and I giggled and chatted while listening to the sounds of the rain and devouring a slice of pie. I cannot think of a better way to spend a Tuesday afternoon!

Sweet Lemon Inn and Kitchen located at 812 S. Church St. Georgetown, TX features three guest rooms and a downstairs eatery serving up honest food Tuesdays through Saturdays. What started as a dream for owners, Chef Rachel and Kevin Cummins, became a reality when the couple purchased a historical home in 2013. They were able to open the Inn upstairs in 2014. About a year and a half ago, the cafe opened to the general public so even if you aren't lucky enough to stay at the Inn (my fingers are crossed that I will get to one day!), you can still dine inside or nosh on their delightful patio. The park next door is currently under rennovations, but will be open by the end of 2017 making it that much easier for parents to dine.

When I asked Chef Rachel about her favorites on the menu, it was clear that the baked goods are her babies. Rachel only uses organic sugar, flour and real butter. Breakfast options include kolaches, scones, croissants and cinnamon rolls which are all made from scratch. Sweet Lemon Inn and Kitchen craftfully creates coffee drinks using Organic Summer Moon coffee and organic milk. The lunch menu features sandwiches, salads, a children's menu and desserts.

Placing my order at Sweet Lemon Inn and Kitchen was a challenge since everything sounded good. I was tempted to order two things, but now I have an exscuse to go back! I ended up ordering the Turkey Cobb Salad for two reasons. One, Chef Rachel makes her own salad dressings and the lemon vinaigrette called my name (not to mentioned seemed apropos). Second, typically a cobb salad consists of some over processed chopped up turkey lunch meat, but not Chef Rachel's. Call me a cobb snob now because every detail of this lunch was perfection. The house roasted turkey was tender and flavorful, the localy sourced lettuce was clean and crisp and that dressing, oh that dressing! How did she find such a perfect balance of sweet and tart?

My daughter and I couldn't stop there, since our eyes widened at the sight of the counter's fresh baked goods. My daughter chose the Mississipi Mud Pie which is essentially her dream indulgences wrapped in one (cake, marshmellow and chocolate icing). I tried the Derby Pie and was blown away by the flaky crust and the indulgent chocolate mixed with fresh pecans.

The sign on the door of Sweet Lemon Inn and Kitchen reads, "Come In We're Open," the inviting service encourages you to stay a while and the food urges you to return. This eatery is most certainly a must for you to try whether you're in the mood for a relaxing breakfast, need a moment to reset during the workday or are looking for a healthy eatery to take your kiddos.
